barriohabana community project
BarrioHabana is a community project in Old Havana aimed at fostering the alliance between the government and the private sector in order to improve the quality of life of different generations in a poor area of Havana. Almost two decades after its creation the project bears amazing results. Among the most outstanding ones we have the creation of the first futsal team from Old Havana, an ecological room where kids learn about sustainability and a nursing home where once or twice a week, kids and elders share in an atmosphere of respect, love and devotion.

 what will we do?

Pavel will meet with you at one of the projects. The places to visit will be determined by the activities taking place at the moment. You will visit the senior house and witness the work that Jorge (director of the place) and Margarita (social worker) have been performing to keep this place in a good condition. The elders will probably read a poem or sing a song. They just love receiving visitors! You will also share with the kids from an elementary school nearby who spend the afternoon over there a couple of times a week.
If there is a soccer match or practice you will certainly see it! Soccer has changed the lives of many of the kids from this part of town. Thanks to the support from different foreign organizations, visitors and some independent projects, these kids have uniforms, soccer balls and other sport supplies. Three members of the Cuban futsal team started in BarrioHabana!
This visit is a very rewarding moment. You will get to know a side of Cuba that is not advertised in the guidebooks and magazines!
